How to Back Up Your Phone Data the Right Way

Phones hold photos, contacts, messages and documents that are hard to replace. A lost, stolen or broken device should not mean losing everything. A proper backup takes only a few minutes to set up.

What Should You Back Up?

Think about photos and videos, contacts, messages, app data, documents and settings. Photos are usually the most valuable and the first thing to protect.

Back Up on Android

Open Settings and look for Google backup. Turn on backup to Google Drive for app data, contacts and settings, and use Google Photos to back up pictures and videos automatically over Wi-Fi.

Back Up on iPhone

Go to Settings, tap your name, choose iCloud and turn on iCloud Backup. You can also back up to a computer through Finder or iTunes.

Use More Than One Method

Keep one copy in the cloud and another on your computer or an external drive. If one fails, the other still protects you.

Test Your Backup

Once in a while, check that your recent photos and contacts appear in your cloud account. A backup that has not worked for months is not much help.

Keep It Secure

Protect your cloud account with a strong password and two-factor authentication, since it now holds a copy of your personal data.

Final Thoughts

Turn on automatic backups, keep at least two copies of important data and check them occasionally. It is one of the easiest ways to avoid a very bad day.
